By Train – Budget-friendly, but a marathon New Jalpaiguri (NJP) to Jammu takes around 32 hours. Add the Srinagar leg and you’re looking at close to 40 hours total. Best suited for travellers where the journey itself is part of the plan.
By Bus – Scenic but very long Siliguri to Delhi or Jammu, then onward to Srinagar. Anywhere from 36 to 48-plus hours depending on your route. Only worth it if you have extra days and a love for road trips.

Srinagar

Gulmarg
Gulmarg is the one place on this trip that tends to catch people off guard – even those who’ve read everything about it. The Gondola ride takes you from a green meadow to a snow-covered ridge in about 15 minutes. At the top, even in August, it’s cold and quiet and completely unlike anything else in India. In winter it’s a full ski resort. In summer it’s a wide open meadow where kids run and families spread out picnic blankets. Either way, give it a full day – not a half one.
Pahalgam
Pahalgam doesn’t try to impress you. That’s why it does. The drive takes you through pine forests and apple orchards, past the Lidder river running alongside the road. It’s the kind of place where families slow down and couples actually talk. Betaab Valley is a 20-minute drive from town – named after the Bollywood film shot there – and it’s genuinely beautiful without trying too hard. Aru Valley is quieter still, and worth an afternoon if you have the time.
Sonamarg
The road to Sonamarg is the kind of drive that makes passengers forget their phones. Narrow mountain highway, river on one side, ridgeline on the other, and the occasional waterfall appearing from nowhere. The Thajiwas Glacier sits about 3 kilometres from the main town – you can walk it or take a pony. The glacier is smaller than it used to be, but still remarkable. More than the glacier, it’s the drive itself and the cold, clear air when you step out that people remember.

Before You Pack Your Bags - Things Worth Knowing
Not rules. Just things we wish more people knew before they landed in Srinagar for the first time.
Bring a jacket – every month, no exceptions. Kashmir evenings are cold even in July. Gulmarg is colder still. A light down jacket takes almost no space in your bag.
Your ID is not optional. Aadhaar, Voter ID, or Passport – carry one at all times. Check posts on routes toward Sonamarg and the Line of Control will ask for it.
Book houseboats and hotels early. The good ones on Dal Lake fill up fast from October onwards. What’s left last-minute is overpriced and off the water.
Carry more cash than you think you need. Pony rides, shikara operators, roadside tea shops – none of them take UPI. A few extra thousand makes the trip far more relaxed.
Tell the family your daily plan before entering the valleys. Signal drops in several stretches. Not a problem if people know – a problem if they don’t.
Take altitude seriously. Gulmarg sits at 2,600 metres. A mild headache on Day 1 is normal – drink water, eat light, don’t push it. Anyone with heart or respiratory conditions should speak to their doctor beforehand.
Eat the food properly. Have a Kashmiri Wazwan at a proper local restaurant – not a hotel buffet version. Rogan Josh, Gushtaba, Tabak Maaz. Drink Kahwa tea. These aren’t optional extras; they’re part of why people come back.
Shop carefully in Srinagar. Pashmina shawls and saffron are everywhere – and most of it in tourist markets is not what it claims to be. Ask your guide to point you to a verified shop. It makes a real difference to what you bring home.
Respect local customs. Cover up at mosques and dargahs. Ask before photographing people. Small gestures, big differences.
